When choosing a collar for your dog always make sure it is the right type and fit for your particular breed. If you have a puppy remember they quickly grow so you may need to buy several as it develops. On the other hand don't economise by buying a bigger collar that it can grow into, if it doesn't fit snug enough you may lose your dog out on a walk.

Also remember that your dog develops in different ways as it grows and also as an adult. Dogs necks get longer, wider, dogs put on weight or lose weight. Your dog's collar should always be checked to make sure it is still fitting properly.

I have been known to have to cut puppy collars off fully grown dogs that are too tight to get off safely, as they haven't been checked as the dog has been growing.

Also check the collar itself. Make sure the fabric is still okay, it isn't frayed or cut. Make sure that all the fittings are okay and they aren't bent or misshapen in a way that could injure your dog when the collar is replaced. Also check the tag (make sure it's still present !), check the split ring is still tight and intact and that the lettering on the tag is still legible. It's no good investing in a tag if it can't be read or drops off on a walk.
